The primary goals of our GoFundMe Campaign are:

- to support schools in deprived communities in incorporating a strong mental health support system, based on the successful model we’ve pioneered;

- and to push to change state education funding & policy priorities, so every school will have a mental health support system in place.
1st Goal: Raise $1 million by June 30, 2019

We want to raise awareness and money by asking one hundred thousand people to give a small intentional donation of $10 and then to speak to 10 more people in support of this Go Fund Me Campaign – and so on and so on. Repeating this small action over time will raise the funds to power PazLo to become the school that helps other schools throughout this country implement a successful mental health support model and change state education funding & policy priorities

At PazLo, we know that mental health is fundamental for both school and life success; we have developed a school model that integrates mental health supports that work for all our students.  Working on mental health issues takes time; our model is about taking small intentional steps every day. Over time, with support, everyone is in a better place than where they started.

1st Goal: 100,000 people $10 each = $1,000,000 for Mental Health for ALL Students

The Problem:

The growing and urgent crisis around students’ mental health, compounded by the scarcity of available care, has long been a concern of many educators and health professionals. Interest among lawmakers, however, is a relatively new trend, sparked primarily by the mass of recent school shootings, however, little has changed regarding mental health supports in schools. There is also a growing awareness of the stress and anxiety gripping so many teenagers; UCLA now offers  mental health screening to all incoming freshmen. But little is being done for K-12 students and educators in deprived communities.

PazLo Education Foundation’s Initiative:

At PazLo Education Foundation, we have transformed and strengthened our schools, APEX Academy and Matrix for Success Academy, by "meeting students where they are", using an integrated mental health system designed to help ALL students thrive, both socio-emotionally (mental health) and academically.

3 key features of this model are:

- 150:1 Student to Counselor Ratio: This is our greatest innovation.  A 150:1 student to counselor caseload enables counselors: A) to get to know each student individually; B) to develop a whole student support plan; and C) to provide wrap around services for those who need them. We start with each student’s personal well-being at home, in their neighborhood, and at school before unpacking academic needs. Young people need to know they are safe before they can learn.

In most schools nationally, the average is close to 500 students to 1 counselor (500:1), with some states as high as 882:1(CA) and 941:1(AZ); decreasing the ratio to 150 students to one counselor provides significantly greater access to needed support from counselors. This level of support yields an increase in successful A-G completion (courses required for eligibility for 4-year colleges) and an increased graduation rate. Our past five year growth trends on both data points below.

apex-grad-chart

- 1-Stop Shop: All non-academic student support is offered right at the school site; this includes: after school enrichment and tutoring, alumni post-secondary support, one-on-one counseling, family wraparound services, criminal justice supports, and more. The Counselor individualizes these supports for students and families.

- Continuity of Collective Care (C3):  Setting up a school wide culture of mental health understanding and support for ALL students, school staff, and families with ongoing professional development throughout the school year is key. The Counselor manages a data template (C3) designed for educators to monitor and differentiate student trauma/mental health support, academic progress, and personal future growth to ensure every student can succeed.

The cost to implement our model at a school site depends on how many counselors and support staff need to be added to achieve 150:1 counselor to student ratio. Adding one counselor, social worker, and support staff would be approximately $1.5 to  2 million over a three year period.

Your donation will initially help expand our ongoing community outreach to share our mental health support model with other schools. Our next two professional development workshops are:  "Learning in Trauma" and "Supporting School Staff with Secondary Trauma" for local schools in LA. Over time, we will be able to train and support school to offer the full program.

Help us help schools across this country offer a real chance for success for every student by making sure they integrate strong mental health supports and understanding for students, staff and families.

Make a pledge of $10 today, and ask 10 of your friends or colleagues who care about mental health and our students to do the same!
